Dr Kristy Tan
Kristy is a mechatronic engineer with particular experience in sustainability and biomedical engineering.
Equipped with working knowledge in mechanics, machine design and manufacturing, she has experience working in a large-scale semiconductor plant. Additional specialization subjects for her undergraduate degree include combining electronics and computer programming with mechanical design in areas such as industrial robotics and consumer robotics. Working in a specialized applied research team in building engineering, she provided sustainable design advice to clients based on computational models e.g. computational fluid dynamics and building simulation (thermal conductivity, solar, wind).
During her PhD, she studied the mechanical properties of soft tissues by conducting experiments using rheometry and medical imaging (histology and MRI). In her postdoctoral work, she worked on a technique to create personalized 3D models of the spine based on basic 2D imaging information using finite element modeling techniques. She also developed a technique using MRI to estimate the viscoelasticity of the brain in vivo to detect areas of abnormal tissue in hydrocephalus patients.
