Michelle has worked in intellectual property for more than 15 years and specialises in trade mark law. The main focus of Michelle’s practice is the registration of trade marks in Australia, as well as advising on passing off and trade practices issues relating to misleading and deceptive conduct. Michelle has experience across a broad range of brand protection issues, local and international, including: conducting clearance searches for trade marks and associated packaging; character merchandising; advising on marketing and advertising campaigns; drafting specifications; preparing submissions and evidence for examination, opposition and removal proceedings; appearing at Trade Marks Office Hearings; and enforcing registration rights against infringement.

Michelle has a particular interest in new kinds of signs such shape, colour, and sound marks, and is a current member of the International Trade Mark Association’s Non-Traditional Marks Committee. A keen student of both history and film, Michelle is attending a ten year course on the history of world cinema at the University of Sydney’s Centre for Continuing Education. Her love of storytelling with her training in history has seen her receive both the GC O’Donnell Essay Prize, awarded by the Australian Copyright Council for work displaying original thinking on copyright and the protection of the interests of authors; and the David Campbell Prize, awarded by the Australian National University for written work that shows the most promise in the writing of Australian history as a branch of literature.

Michelle has a background working for government and a specialist intellectual property law firm as well as being part of trade mark teams at patent and trade mark attorney firms. Michelle joined Davies Collison Cave in 2018.
