DCC Forum: The Wi-Fi patent crusade: the next chapter
Davies Collison Cave and BioMelbourne recently joined to co host the CEO Forum Series Luncheon with Terry Healy, Special Counsel, CSIRO as the guest speaker. CSIRO has spent many years battling with a number of major IT corporations over royalties in relation to CSIRO’s Wi-Fi technology, and last year a major breakthrough occurred when settlement was reached in return for an undisclosed payment. Dr Healy has been closely involved with the licensing and the litigation from the beginning.
In the second round, CSIRO is bringing the fight to a number of mobile carriers, which CSIRO argues are selling devices that in fringe its patents. CSIRO says the use of mathematical algorithms covered by its patents form the basis of Wi-Fi technology and claims that the technology is being used in a range of products, including smartphones, laptops, routers and games consoles. Terry gave an update on the CSIRO legal battles and explained how he gained the unwavering support of his loyal colleagues and the CSIRO board to conduct this major litigation.
