The theme “Innovations that drive economic performance in Tasmania” was the topic of choice. The guest speakers captivated the audience with their passion for innovation and in Tasmania’s continued success.
Guest speakers on the evening included: Michael Field AC, Former Premier of Tasmania and Chairman Australian Innovations Research Centre; Dr Stephen Giugni, Chief executive Officer, Tasmanian ICT Centre, CSIRO; and Professor Ian Gentle, Head of Science, Australian Synchrotron.
Michael Field addressed the audience on the nature of innovation and why it is becoming more important as an economic driver. He also spoke on the challenges in linking research and business opportunities with venture capital and business support to ensure adoption of scientific breakthroughs. Dr Stephen Giugni focussed on the combination of leading edge ICT research and interaction with industry to promote a vibrant ICT eco-system in Tasmania. Professor Ian Gentle provided an overview of the Synchrotron’s operations including available facilities, examples of work under taken and the capacity available for assisting industry.
