His areas of practice include the prosecution of Australian and New Zealand trade mark applications, availability searches, opposition proceedings, removal actions and the enforcement of trade mark and related rights, as well as assisting local clients in protecting and managing their trade mark rights internationally. Nicholas has particular expertise in Australian and New Zealand opposition matters, as well as in the area of protection and enforcement of geographical indications.
Nicholas’s clients include a number of international and local clients across multiple sectors, including both well-known and SME companies in the retail services, food and beverage, luxury goods, financial services, clothing, mining and technology/computer software sectors.
Nicholas has authored articles published in the World Trademark Review, the World Trademark Review Daily and the IPSANZ Journal, and regularly contributes to DCC’s IP Updates. Nicholas has also presented at the IPTA Annual Conference, and assists in the teaching of trade marks related subjects as part of the Masters of Law course at the University of Melbourne.
Nicholas regularly drafts, or contributes to the drafting of, submissions on behalf of stakeholders to various trade mark law and practice consultations in Australia and New Zealand, including in relation to matters involved extended geographical indications protection and on trade mark practice related issues.
Nicholas holds a Master of Intellectual Property Law from the University of Melbourne and is a Fellow of IPTA. Nicholas is also currently a Member of the IPTA Trade Marks, Designs and Indigenous Knowledge Sub-Committee.
Prior to joining DCC in 2014, Nicholas worked in the IP litigation team at a leading Australian law firm in Melbourne, with a focus on trade mark and geographical indication related advice, opposition and enforcement matters.
