Paul has practised as a litigator for 25 years, and exclusively as a patent litigator for 15 years. He is recognised as one of Australia’s leading patent litigators.
Paul also practises in areas that commonly arise in conjunction with patent litigation, such as registered designs, misuse of confidential information and relevant aspects of both consumer and competition law.
For the last 15 years Paul’s practice has consisted primarily of major national and multi-jurisdictional patent litigation in the pharmaceutical, life sciences, and mining sectors.
In the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors, Paul represents two of the world’s top ten pharmaceutical companies. In the course of his career, Paul has had the conduct of biologic and small molecule matters relating to multiple treatments for cancer, HIV, mental illness, IBD and osteoporosis. In the course of these matters Paul has obtained comprehensive industry knowledge regarding drug development, clinical trials, manufacture and formulation. Paul also has a detailed understanding of the operation of the ARTG and PBS (and related government bodies) in so far as they relate to patent litigation.
Having previously lived and practised in Western Australia, Paul has had the conduct of mining related matters since 2009. He presently represents one of the top three Australian multinational mining companies, and one of the world’s top 5 mining equipment manufactures. Paul has substantial industry knowledge in relation to the mining sector generally, with particular expertise in relation to autonomous mining.
Paul has also had the conduct of patent matters in numerous other diverse fields including nucleic acid diagnostics, food technology, and injectable fillers for aesthetic procedures.
Paul practised in the litigation team at Clayton Utz before moving to Ashurst (Blake Dawson) in 2000. Paul was made a Senior Associate at Ashurst (Blake Dawson) in 2004. Paul was invited to join Wrays as a Principal and Director of Wrays Lawyers in 2009. Paul was invited to join the DCC partnership in 2014.
