Davies Collison Cave welcomes new partner Dr Gordon Hughes
Davies Collison Cave has expanded its intellectual property practice with the appointment of Dr Gordon Hughes as a new partner.
Dr Hughes is a renowned expert in the area of information technology law, data protection, intellectual property commercialisation, and e-commerce and data privacy.
A former partner at Ashurst Australia, Dr Hughes has been a leading figure amongst IT and data protection lawyers for several decades. He has authored and co-authored several seminal texts. He is the co-author of the loose-leaf service ‘Computer Contracts in Australia: Principles and Precedents’, and update editor of Robert Dean’s loose-leaf ‘Trade Secrets and Privacy‘, both of which are regarded as Australia’s leading legal publications in their respective fields. Other publications include ‘Private Life in a Digital World‘, co-authored with Professor Margaret Jackson, and ‘Data Protection in Australia‘.
Dr Hughes is a former president of the Law Institute of Victoria, the Law Council of Australia and LAWASIA. He is also a former president of the Victorian Society for Computers and the Law. In 2010 he was appointed a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, and in 2015 he was appointed professional in residence at Monash University Law School. He has held a number of government appointments over the years, and remains a part-time member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. He is chairman of the LAWASIA Business Law Section and has strong connections amongst the South-East Asian legal profession.

Dr Hughes’s appointment will continue the expansion of the Davies Collison Cave’s IP litigation and commercialisation practice, which in recent years has moved into Sydney and Brisbane.
