Elizabeth Godfrey on being a Trade mark attorney

I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the DCC team since joining the firm in June 2000.  During my years with the firm I have had some amazing mentors who are at the absolute forefront of IP law. I have also been extremely lucky to work in a friendly, flexible and progressive work environment.

In my daily practice I advise on all aspects of trade marks including search analysis and advice, prosecution of domestic and overseas applications, opposition proceedings and enforcement of trade mark rights.  With my background as a litigation lawyer for more than 10 years, I have a particular interest and strong practice in trade mark enforcement work and I’m a specialist in trade mark protection and enforcement in the online environment.  As a result of this speciality I regularly advise clients on the use of trade marks in domain names, Google Adwords and in social media – platforms which are of ever increasing importance to our clients.

Trade mark attorneys in my team practice in both Australia and New Zealand and have access to an established network of international associates. We have strong relationships with overseas clients and associates,  particularly throughout the United States, Europe and South-East Asia.  I work responsively and in close collaboration with my clients to ensure they receive high quality, commercially realistic advice and outcomes.

As a result of the exposure and opportunities DCC has offered me, I am regularly invited to present to my colleagues and peers at external seminars. Among these are the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association, Legalwise and more recently as part of Melbourne University’s Masters of Law Course.  I have also been published in Managing Intellectual Property, Intellectual Property Magazine, Internet Law Bulletin and the Australian Intellectual Property Law Bulletin.
