Privacy reforms – where are we heading?

The drip-feeding of Australia’s privacy reforms continued with the passage of the Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 in November 2024. The legislation introduced new penalties, enhanced the OAIC’s enforcement powers and heralded a new statutory tort for serious invasions of privacy. It tinkered with some of the Australian Privacy Principles without introducing major changes, whilst deferring consideration of some of the more anomalous or contentious issues. So, what happens next?
